He made this call while speaking to journalists after placing a wreath at the Shaheed Minar on Saturday (February 21). Ishraq Hossain stated that the true purpose of the Liberation War can only be achieved by forgetting past divisions and uniting the nation. Referring to Jamaat-e-Islami’s stance and their apology, the State Minister noted that for whatever reason, they have apologized for their position both at home and abroad. He added that although the language of their apology might not be to everyone’s liking, the real question is whether we will continue to cling to this division. He asked whether we should divide the nation once again and lead it toward destruction, exactly as the Awami League had done. Emphasizing that the politics of division never brings welfare to the country, he stated that it is crucial to learn from past mistakes. Ishraq Hossain mentioned that the major challenge before us now is to tackle the country’s current crises unitedly, reiterating that unity, rather than division, was the true objective of our great Liberation War. The State Minister further remarked that observing Martyrs’ Day with the participation of all political parties in a democratic environment is a positive sign. He affirmed that the new government aims to create an environment where long-standing political and social divisions can be resolved. Incidentally, for the first time, top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, including its Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, visited the Shaheed Minar to pay their respects to the memory of the language martyrs.
